Grumpy Wargamer – 7th Ed First Impressions.

Someone got their rulebook early and have been giving some impressions on the beast.

Got my copy of 7th edition today, (I know it’s earlier and no I won’t tell you how) and after a few hours of reading through and picking out some of the main changes that I have found I have to say I’m liking it. I’m not sure it’s going to be to every body’s taste as some stuff has been simplified (dumbed down to the avid forum GW hate mongers) ย now I’m just going to go right ahead and say that the 3 book set is both pointless and awesome at the same time. How can it be both? Well put it this way there was no way GW where going to release a BRB without adding in the 40k fluff and what I call the warhammer 40k google image search results. And this makes the BRB rather heavy rather annoying and rather pointless especially when it is going to have to be dragged around from game to game. So it made perfect sense to have the rule book separate from the rest of the fluff. You are left with a codex sized rule book to cart about with you instead of a tomb of useless images and fluff. Now wile the constant handing out of GW fluff is somewhat like grandad from only fools and horses siting down in his frayed arm chair constantly repeating the phrase “during the war” it would be silly to not include it. After all new customer base is what GW wants and handing someone a book with rules in it and no explanation as to why the tin men with spikes are fighting the tin men without
ย spikes, is not going to entice anyone into the world of the 41 millennium.

To actaully find out some info, you know what to do ๐Ÿ˜‰

8-bit travelling even further

As you may remember over at Power of Suggestion they created an amazing fun carry case for their Dreamer Crew, over here.

Well they have gone even further now with said NES becoming the carry tray during the game..

Adepta Piraticus

So thanks to some Gits on Twitter looking at you @robhobart and @TheBlueHeretic.

I have been mulling with the mad idea of Pirates in sppaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacccccccccceeeeeeeee.

Its one of the few things GW havent touched upon alongside vikings, vampires, templars, monks etc. So with this in mind what does the internet have to say? Well after some searching and surprisingly not much stuff was found but I did find 2 pieces of (eight) awesome.

This artwork for a Space Marine Pirate with shoulder padded parrot in tow. Now this is Cool!

I also found this on Superpunch.net which is even more awesome and also something I couldnt hope to match!!

You can see close-ups of sexy HERE. It has help give me ideas for a possible loyalist army of pirates. As we know Pirates are the Robin Hood of the sea…

Which Dex

First up which Codex is going to work best for the Sea Salts, the obvious one is going to be Space Wolves. I mean Vikings and Pirates are pretty close right? Now one that I thought could also be close is Iron Hands, hear me out.

They have a lot of augments and love keeping vehicles up and running, and what do Pirates have/need? Peg legs and Hooks alongside needing to keep their ships in order. See not completely insane!

So at this point we are going with a loyalist rule set. Next up is the sort of models you would need for such an endeavour..

Models

The easiest one is to use Broadside Bart from PP as a Captain, done!

Then we have the difficult position of should pirate marines be converted SM or CSM. Trouble is I can see uses from both sides.

Vehicles are easy just stick one of the sails from the Dark Eldar kits on the top… Job done ๐Ÿ˜‰ The biggest problem is that you think of space pirates you immediately go to steampunk look and I think anything else is going to be difficult to get past. Especially as I see Terminators as Big Daddy types from Bio shock.

It’s almost to easy to make the leap with them! So clearly the models are going to need some work but the idea of a power hook instead of a power fist could be VERY funny ๐Ÿ˜‰

I suppose then we will need lots of beards involved so a nod to the space wolves could be in order.

Colours

This is a tricky one, as any sea colour like above would work, but most pirates seem to be black/reds/browns. OR we just run with this;

Naming Troops

Moving onto a linking a pirate crew to choices within the SM army I have borrowed a list made up HERE, which will do very nicely. From this we can tweak and what not to see where we end up..

  • Captain – Chapter master/Captain
  • First Mate – Chaplain/Company Champion
  • Bosun – Company Champion/Veterans
  • Navigator – Librarian

  • Master Gunner – Techmarine
  • Cook/Surgeon – Apothecary
  • Cabin Boy/Powder Monkey – Scouts
  • Sailors – Marines

While all vehicles need good ship names Mary Rose for drop pods (google it ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) for instance.

So overall am I insane?

X-Wing – a Beginners Fall

So after a call for guest writers, a few idio…volutneers came forward ๐Ÿ™‚

This is the first of what I hope is some semi-regular people taking time to add to the madness on here, so over to Harry..

Hobby, we all love it. For me it involves almost 20 years of Warhammer 40k.

I tried Necromunda, Gorka Morka and Spacehulk but they all got sold. Even other armies got sold to leave me with loads of awesome space marines. Why? Because I love them, they are to me the epitome of a sci-fi army; Beautiful.

However I have found a new game, one to stay!! Since I was a little boy I loved science fiction and so when I was looking over Element games and I discovered X-wing from Fantasy Flight Games. Oh the joy, my face lit up like a kid in a candy shop, I bought myself the X-wing starter set straight away.

All you need to get going and to learn the basics, not bad for ยฃ27. I do love my painting and modelling but one appeal of these is the fact they come fully painted ready to play.

First impressions of the models are good. Obviously the hobby head starts to think about repainting them to my own design, but its not needed and I have far too many things to do.

I played a few games with some colleagues who don’t do tabletop gaming and they liked the games. Didn’t take longer than half hour for 3 of them to get to grips with the game play even whilst drinking.

As far as game size goes each ship has points costs, and also pilots do too. Luke Skywalkers X-wing is more in cost than a rookie pilots, but Luke does come with r2d2.

Untitled

As you can see in the bottom right hand corner Luke costs 5 points more. This will come into play in another post.

I couldn’t resist and ended up buying more of the smaller expansions including Slave 1, the HWK-290 and a Tie advanced..

As you can see in the pictures each expansion comes with more cards and more tokens, I have had to set up a storage system to keep thing organized other wise I would be a mess!

Summing up, my first impressions are great. The game play is fun and easily manageable and the models come painted! I will never have an unpainted model in this game!

Hopefully, my next post will be a bit more about playing the game, if the bear is up for having me.

Rivet Wars after playing thoughts.

After Final Gamez had some initial thoughts on Rivet Wars HERE

They have dipped a little further with some more thoughts after getting some games in..

So finally got to play Rivet Wars the other night, had a couple of games.

Only did the first two scenarios, which didn’t involve using the cards.ย
So lets start with the basics, we know I like the models, I think they are genius and very simple but so detailed and so amazing and rather cute! Let’s not deny this they are.ย
Now the rules work, and I think we interpreted them fairly well. So if we got it wrong then I have just played a really fun made up game, if I got them right then I just played a really fun game that someone else made.
And it is fun, it’s very fast, no need to worry about army lists and that, you start each turn with an allowance of deployment points, which you can’t carry over! An rivets which you can. So working out what’s going on the table is done on a turn by turn system.
